Clinics and Descriptions

General Nursing - Our seven Practice Nurses work from both surgeries. In addition to the ones detailed below, they also hold daily clinics for dressings, blood pressure checks and NHS Health Checks.

Nurse Practitioner - Appointments are available on a daily basis to see one of our Nurse Practitioners who are able to prescribe medication if required including antibiotics. The clinic deals with a variety of ailments including chest infections, ear infections, skin conditions and stomach problems. Please ask at reception for a full list or go to www.patient.co.uk for more detail.  

Diabetes - Janet, Elna and Jeanette our Specialist Diabetic Nurses, run clinics at both the Denham and Aysgarth Medical Centres. All our Diabetic patients are invited in for their Annual Review on the month of their birthday. Pre Diabetic Checks will be arranged first with our experienced HCA Alison. Diabetic Education Sessions and Annual Retinal Screening is also available and can be arranged at the review. Click on the Local Community Services for a list of centres.

Asthma - Our Specialist Asthma Nurses Kim, Jayne, Elna and Jeanette offer regular checks and assessments. They will ensure that the most effective inhaler devices are being used to provide excellent symptom control. They also advise patients on long term management of their own asthma.

COPD - This clinic is run by Kim, Jayne and Elna our Specialist Respiratory Nurses and is by invitation only. Patients will automatically be asked to attend this clinic in the month of their birthday for their review.

Heart Disease - Cardiac Specialists Kim and Janet offer annual cardiac checks which include blood pressure monitoring, medication reviews and a blood test assessment for cholesterol. All patients with Heart Disease are invited in for their annual review in the month of their birthday.

Contraception - Ongoing contraception and family planning advice is available by appointment with our nurses.

Ante-natal Care - Qualified Midwives attend both the Denham and Aysgarth Medical Centres for routine ante-natal check ups. They are available every Friday morning in Denham and every Monday morning in Aysgarth. Our Doctors share the care with the midwives so you can also book to see the GP for antenatal check ups.

Childhood Immunisations - Routine childhood immunisations are administered by our Practice Nurses at both Denham and Aysgarth Medical Centres by appointment. For a full schedule of childhood immunisations click on our Family Health link in the menu on the right hand side.

Phlebotomy - We have qualified phlebotomists from Wexham Park Hospital available for blood tests in both Denham and Aysgarth Medical Centres. They run a clinic by appointment only in Denham on a Monday and Wednesday, and are in Aysgarth on a Tuesday morning.

Cervical Smears - Smears are taken on a recall system and you will be automatically contacted when it is due. They are taken by any of our Practice Nurses by appointment only.

Non NHS Services - The NHS does not pay for some services we provide such as private insurance forms, driving licence applications, fit to fly/travel letters, certain travel vaccinations/medications etc. For a full list including fees please ask reception.

Private Chiropody - Helen Bennett BSc(Hons).MChS Chiropodist and Podiatrist is available every Friday morning in Denham and Wednesdays in Aysgarth. For appointments please telephone Helen on 01753 651279.

Private Foot Health Practitioner - Vanessa Shepherd FHPT/FHPP is available in Denham every Thursday morning. To book an appointment please call Vanessa on 07512 985158.

Travel Vaccinations

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. It is important to make this appointment as early as possible  - at least 6 weeks before you travel. It will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine which vaccinations are required.  There is further information about countries and vaccinations required on the links below.

Some travel vaccines, including Malaria protection are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge.  This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS and are therefore chargeable.

First Aid Kit

Pack a small first aid and holiday health kit containing:

• Travel sickness tablets
• Paracetamol, including paracetamol and/or ibuprofen syrups for children
• Sunscreen - SPF 15 or higher (SPF 16 or higher for small children)
• Sunburn treatment, eg calamine
• Plasters and antiseptic wipes
• Oral rehydration solution; anti-diarrhoea
• Indigestion remedy, eg antacid
• Insect repellent
• Water purification tablets
• Condoms/other contraceptives
• Antihistamine tablets
• In some developing countries or where medical supplies may not be reliable, it 
   may be wise to include sterile needles and syringes, dressings and suture 
   materials

All these items should be available from your chemist.

When Abroad

Check on the quality of drinking water:
Where there is a risk of food or water-borne disease, it is wise to eat food that is freshly cooked, or fruit that can be peeled. Avoid drinking the local water supply or raw food washed in it. Remember, this includes ice in drinks and cleaning your teeth. Bottled water is usually available in tourist areas; choose carbonated where possible as this cannot easily be filled from a tap! Water purification tablets can be used if you are ‘roughing it’.

Antidiarrhoeals:
Diarrhoea and vomiting can ruin a holiday. Apart from eating and drinking wisely, be prepared - take antidiarrhoeals with you. However, these are not suitable for children or if the diarrhoea contains any blood. Antidiarrhoeals will alleviate the symptoms and electrolyte solutions will replace essential salts. If you are afflicted, try to replace fluid loss with bottled water and remember, as children dehydrate more quickly than adults, it may be wise to call for help.

Insect Repellents
It is advisable to use effective insect repellents wherever there are mosquitoes. Apart from the irritating bites they can inflict, mosquitoes may also carry diseases - including malaria and yellow fever - in countries where contact with these diseases is a risk.

Beware of the sun!
Use a high factor sun screen particularly in the first few days of exposure. Small children burn very easily and need adequate protection from a total sun block applied frequently. Keep children in the shade as much as possible and provide plenty of water. In hot climates drink plenty of non-alcoholic drinks. If you are not passing water regularly, you are not drinking enough.

On Your Return

If you are ill and need to see your doctor, don’t forget to mention that you have recently travelled abroad.
If you receive medical treatment abroad, tell your own doctor on your return.
If you donate blood, tell the transfusion service staff which countries you have visited.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening

The NHS invites all men in the year they are turning 65 for screening.

The main blood vessel that supplies blood to the body is the aorta.  The aorta runs down from the heart through the chest and abdomen.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) occurs when the walls of the aorta weaken and expand.  As the wall stretches it becomes weaker and can rupture causing internal bleeding.

Around 85 out of 100 people die when an aneurysm bursts.  Men are 6 times more likely to have an aneurysm than women.

We recommend flu and pneumonia vaccinations as advised by the Department of Health and for patients who suffer from a long term chronic condition. 

The injectable flu vaccine will continue to be offered to those aged 50 and over, pregnant women, carers and adults and babies (aged six months to two years) with a long-term medical condition.

The nasal spray flu vaccine is also for children aged two to 17 who are "at risk" from flu, such as children with long-term health conditions. Some of these children will be offered two doses of the vaccine.

Bowel Cancer

Did you know that bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK? If you are aged 60-74, you will automatically be sent a free kit to help detect bowel cancer early.

If you are 75 or over you can call 0800 707 6060 to request your free kit. The bowel cancer screening test is called (FIT) faecal immunochemical test. It looks for tiny traces of blood. You can do the test at home.

The kit includes a detailed leaflet on how to do the test. You then can send it back in a prepaid hygienic envelope. 

If you experience symptoms or a change in your bowel habits that is not normal to you please contact your GP who will arrange tests and can refer you to a specialist.

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. Around 55,900 people are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK. That is more than 150 people a day. 

1 in 7 women in the UK develop breast cancer during their lifetime. It is more common in older women. 

Breast cancer risk can be affected by age, family history and lifestyle factors such as obesity and smoking.

The NHS has a five point plan for being breast aware:-

• know what is normal for you
• look at and feel your breasts
• know which changes to look for
• see your doctor about any unusual changes
• attend screening if you are 50 years or older

Every 3 years, patients aged between 50-70, who are registered with a GP and living in Buckinghamshire are invited to have routine mammograms.

You’ll get a free and automatic invitation so there’s no need to make your own appointment. Women attending for the first time may get an invitation between the ages of 50 and 53. If you have any questions regarding breast screening please contact 01494 425689 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday.

Cervical Cancer

Cervical screening aims to prevent cervical cancer. The NHS cervical screening programme invites women aged between 25 and 64 for cervical screening. You can book your screening at the practice with one of our nurses and will be invited every 3 years if you are aged 25-50 and every 5 years from ages 51-64. The results come in within 2-6 weeks. 

The most common symptoms of cervical cancer include:

• unusual vaginal bleeding
• pain or discomfort during sex
• vaginal discharge
• pain in the area between the hip bones (pelvis)

You should see your GP if you have any unusual bleeding
