Calling NHS 111 should only happen should you not be able to use the online advice

The NHS and Public Health England (PHE) are extremely well prepared for outbreaks of new infectious diseases. The NHS has put in place measures to ensure the safety of all patients and NHS staff while also ensuring services are available to the public as normal.

You will need to self-isolate if you have any of the following:

  • you have a new continuous cough – this means you’ve started coughing repeatedly

  • you have a high temperature – you feel hot to touch on your chest or back

  • you've been in close contact with someone with a confirmed diagnosis of coronavirus

NHS 111 has an online coronavirus service that can tell you if you need medical help and advise you what to do.

Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. Stay indoors and avoid close contact with other people. Call 111 if you need to speak to someone.

Prescribing options

As of April 2020 we will no longer print out paper prescriptions

  • If you have nominated a local pharmacy of your choice, then an electronic prescription will be sent at the end of your consultation. This is real time, so there is no delay in the pharmacist getting this request. As such, by the time you attend the pharmacy they will have received this electronic prescription. See below for more information.
  • If you do not have a nominated pharmacy, the clinician or receptionist will give you the choice to choose one or it will be sent to the nearest local pharmacy from the surgery.

Electronic Prescription Service (EPS)

If you get regular prescriptions, the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) may be able to save you time by avoiding unnecessary trips to your GP. EPS makes it possible for your prescriptions to be sent electronically to the pharmacy or dispenser of your choice. 

Choosing a pharmacy or dispensing appliance contractor to process your EPS prescription is called nomination. This means you'll no longer collect a paper repeat prescription from your GP practice. Instead, you can go straight to the nominated pharmacy or dispensing appliance contractor to pick up your medicines or medical appliances.

Because your pharmacist has already received your electronic prescription, they may be able to prepare your items in advance, so you just have to pick it up with no extra wait, but this depends on the capacity of pharmacists on the day and may not be possible all the time.
